In his youth, Gareth was a bit of a pub crawler, and a promiscuous sort. Nowadays he is head of state at Waking Sea, and thus, had to change his outlook on life, and his curb his habits. He handles affairs of state, occasionally meeting with his cousin, Teyrn Fergus Cousland. Still, he misses the days he spent in his teenage years, before his father died in a battle.
Background:
Gareth Cousland is the second cousin of Teyrn Bryce Cousland. He grew up in the Bannorn of Waking Sea, on the borders between Ferelden and the Free Marches. As a cousin of one of two Teyrns, he was often brought to Highever, and grew up alongside Fergus, and later, Macha Cousland. Gareth and Fergus often played at different games, usually involving wooden swords and invisible Orlesians. Eventually came his teenage years, and Gareth found himself attracted to his cousin Macha, but since no arrangment had been made for their marriage, he didn't really bother wooing her, and went about pub crawling in the bannorn, drinking and whoring his way into hedonistic bliss. Unfortunately, it did not last, his father was killed in a battle repelling some Wildlings. Stricken with grief, Gareth had to re-evaluate his life, and took on the role of Bann at age 19.
After a few years, there were rumors of a Blight starting in the south, and Gareth was one of those who rode to Ostagar with his own army. He was already at Ostagar when Arl Howe betrayed and murdered everyone in Highever except Fergus (who had already left for Ostagar the day before) and Macha (who escaped in the custody of the Warden Commander Duncan). Furious when he got the news, but by the time he did, he was fighting Darkspawn alongside King Cailan. When the Wardens arrived at the ruins, Gareth reunited with both Fergus and Macha, but only briefly. King Cailan was betrayed by Teyrn Loghain Mac Tir, abandoning the king to die at the hands of the Darkspawn. After the betrayal, Gareth fled with his forces back north, routed from the battle.
The Blight continued north, eventually reaching Waking Sea and Gareth fought alongside his troops, many of his townsfolk dying to the Darkspawn or getting dragged below into the Deep Roads. Sure enough, the Blight was abruptly ended when all seemed lost, and the Darkspawn dispersed in a panic, disappearing. Exhausted, the remaining Waking Sea defenders rebuilt what was destroyed, but it would be a long time recovering completely, and Gareth fell into a depression after everything.
Personality:
Before the Blight, Gareth was an outgoing, outspoken person, with little care for raising a family or even taking over for taking the role of Bann. After his father's death, he changed, losing his philandering spirit, hardened by that, and then the betrayal of Rendon Howe occured and it drove him into despair and bitterness. He put on a brave face for his people, but in private, he often sought solace in the bottle. Even knowing his cousins lived through the horrors of the Blight, Gareth was never the same again.
Weapons/Armor:
Waking Sea prides itself on its imports from the neighbouring nations of Orlais and the Free Marches, as such, it has access to exotic materials. Gareth often dressed in Antivan Silks when not in formal dress, and when attending events such as the Landsmeet in Denerim or battle, he wears Onyx Heavy Armor. His weapons are a longsword and shield bearing the coat of arms of Waking Sea.
Appearance:
Bann Gareth is tall, and well-built, having the chiselled features of Ferelden nobility. He has short brown hair with blue eyes, and sports a proud beard on his face as well. Due to the battles during the Blight, especially the invasion of Waking Sea, Gareth has acquired some scars and a weary expression on his face.
