Character Name:
Ianto Bryland
Age:
28
Sex:
Male
Race:
Human
Class:
Warrior
Specializations:
Templar / Champion
Favored skills:
Longsword / Dagger Combo
Hobbies: Talking, joking, flirting, whatever else captures his attention
Background:
There isn't much interesting to Ianto's life, as he'd like to say. He was the only son of Arl Bryland, and though he stood to inherit everything from his father, his rebellious nature left the Chantry as his father's only option for him. Ianto was always too smart for his own obnoxious good, and the amount of trouble he found himself in as a teenage forced his father's hand into sending him to the Templars for training. He often clashed heads with his fellow trainees and commanders, though he did find a sort of unwilling grandfather figure in Knight-Commander Greagoir (and even in First Enchanter Irving, who Ianto freely admits to liking very much). He never took any of his lessons seriously, and often outright attempted to sabotage his own training, but he made a promising Templar, and so Greagoir kept him on.
When he was 20 he finished his training and took his vows, though in all of his time, he'd never seen much wrong with mages, and actually felt rather sorry for them. At 21, he found himself falling in love with a young elven mage of the Circle, Maari. They began a secret semi-romance, though she was never as confident as he was that they wouldn't be found out. However, little Maari failed her Harrowing, and was killed by a newer Templar recruit, Cullen. After that, Ianto never quite forgave the Templar order, and found himself more and more favoring the mages, seeing them as people with lives and emotions, who were oppressed unfairly by the Templars. Still, despite wanting to do something- defect from the order, do something to change things, anything- Ianto found his hand forced. His addiction to lyrium was greater than most other Templars, and he couldn't go long enough without it to do anything but continue to obey his orders.
The Blight proved to be the perfect opportunity for Ianto, however. With chaos erupting in the Circle Tower (to this day, Ianto has never seen anything more horrific than mages and templars alike being massacred by Abominations), and in Ferelden, Ianto took his chance to escape the Circle, leaving to start a life of his own. Despite his attitude, he does have something of a hero complex (it comes with the Templar training), and he offers his help wherever he can. Even after the defeat of the Arch Demon, Ferelden is far from healed, and he plans to offer his services where he can.
Personality: At first, Ianto comes off as a grown-up teenager. He likes to have a good time, and rarely seems to take things seriously. He jokes, makes sarcastic comments, flirts with anyone and anything willing to take it, and has a cocky smile to wrap it all up. He's prone to complaining about things that don't even merit complaining about, and usually with a broad smile on his face. Underneath that, though, Ianto is constantly struggling with a lifestyle that was forced on him, and a hero-complex that he can never quite quell. He's smarter than he or anyone else gives him credit for, and sometimes has an unorthodox way of thinking that can prove invaluable in certain situations. As a trained Templar, he is an exceptional fighter, able to hold his own against even the strongest of mages, though he rarely uses likes to resort to using his Templar powers. He also has something of a desire to prove himself, which feeds his hero-complex.
Perhaps the most frightening aspect of Ianto's person is his lyrium addiction. A day or two without it leaves him twitchy and somewhat irritable, and longer than that can lead him into full-blown convulsions, anger, hallucinations, and passing out. He's been trying to quit for some time, but its been hard to do on his own. Luckily, few people outside of the Templar order know about the lyrium-addiction, so he's been hiding it well.
When he's around people he really likes, much of his cocky, self-assured facade washes away, and he's often left stumbling over his words or putting his foot in his mouth. He never gets as good as he gives, and when people respond to his flirtations in kind, or matches his sarcastic comments with their own, he quickly turns flustered before finding his footing again.
Weapons/Armor: Ianto never liked the clunky armor of the Templars, and so he soon abandoned it for lighter leather armor with a few metal reinforcements. His sword and dagger are made of a reddish, coppery-colored steel, and both are slightly curved. (His sword resembles Dumat's Spine in shape.)
